When searching for an air conditioning or heating contractor to repair or replace your indoor comfort system, most people want a reputable company with good prices. But there are several other criteria to look for when evaluating an HVAC contractor to install or repair the system for your home.

Check HVAC Contractor Reviews

Company reviews are powerful. Traditional search engines and review apps are designed to provide you with insight into previous customer experiences.

Google, Yelp, NextDoor, and others have great ways to look at HVAC contractors. But do remember that not all reviews are valid. When it comes to reviews, the majority wins. Reviews by the majority of previous customers will give you a good indication of your experience with them. These online reviews may help you determine which potential HVAC contractor might be the best fit for your situation.

Additionally, certain air conditioner and heating manufacturers go a step further. They provide local listings of contracts, reviews, and the ability to book a contractor directly from the manufacturer's website.

Check HVAC Qualifications

Many states require that HVAC contractors be licensed. Yet surprisingly, some do not.  However, all states have some form of required qualification or certification. At a minimum, all HVAC technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere are required to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification.

Many technicians are also certified through organizations such as NATE (North American Technician Excellence) and may display a patch on their uniform demonstrating their certification.

Certain manufacturers, including Daikin, require those HVAC companies representing their brand to have an HVAC license. Be sure to ask about your technician’s qualifications and certifications.

Estimates and HVAC Financing

When considering different contractors, it is important to get quotes from several providers and compare prices and services. A reputable HVAC contractor will be happy to provide you with this information so that you can make an informed decision. Additionally, ask if financing is available through the contractor. A simple, streamlined financing process can help ease the initial investment in case your HVAC system needs to be replaced.

Communication

Communication is key when working with an HVAC company and they should provide a reasonable time window for your appointment.

When making an appointment, ask if the technician or dispatcher will be staying in touch with you by phone, text, or email leading up to your service appointment.

  • Was the contractor punctual?

During the appointment, your HVAC contractor should listen to your concerns and take the time to explain their findings. Depending on the nature of the appointment (emergency or annual inspection), a technician may perform a complete system evaluation. This process can take time and should not just be a quick once-over. Upon completion, the technician should review any concerning results with you.

  • Did customers feel heard and were indoor comfort needs being understood?

When it comes to your HVAC system, you need to work with a contractor who truly listens to you and takes the time to understand your needs. After all, your family’s indoor comfort is at stake, and it's crucial that your contractor quickly respond appropriately when issues arise. A good HVAC contractor will take the time to address any concerns you have and make sure that their recommendations and solutions match up with what you're looking for. With an experienced and trusted HVAC professional on your side, you can rest assured that your needs are being met and that the health of your system is in good hands.

  • Did customers feel pressured into buying something they didn’t need?

When it comes to choosing an HVAC contractor, it is important to maintain a healthy skepticism. Unfortunately, some contractors may try to put pressure on you to buy equipment or services that you may not really need. This tactic can be very deceptive, and it can cost you a lot of money in the long run. This is why it’s important to read reviews and ask neighbors for recommendations.

  • Are HVAC questions being answered?

A contractor should be able to explain, in detail, the different steps involved in any potential HVAC projects, financing options, and any preventative actions that should be taken to prevent problems down the road. In addition, it is crucial for your contractor to provide detailed written quotes or estimates, documentation about the work that was completed, as well as more detailed inspection reports or maintenance schedules.

Value and Quality

New HVAC systems and repairs can be a significant investment. It is essential to seek out the best value for your home’s needs, which may not always be the lowest price. Hiring a qualified, reputable heating and cooling contractor is just as important as the cost. Doing the job correctly the first time may help eliminate the need for repeat visits, saving you money and time in the long run.

A good HVAC contractor will be knowledgeable, pleasant, professional, courteous, patient, and willing to answer your questions. Remember, they are a service company, and you have many local options to choose from.
